Choosing the right tape
Different surfaces need different levels of tack. Standard masking tape is suitable for many general tasks. Low-tack and delicate-surface tapes are designed for freshly painted walls and wallpaper, where strong adhesive could lift the finish. Wider tapes suit larger areas of protection, while narrow tapes are great for fine lines and curves.
Getting a sharp line
Press the tape down firmly along the edge, especially at the paint line, to help stop paint seeping underneath. Apply your paint, then remove the tape while the paint is still slightly wet, pulling slowly at a low angle. If the paint has dried, score along the edge first with a knife to avoid pulling away the finish.
Where tape helps
Use it around window frames, skirting boards, door frames, light switches and ceiling edges. It also holds dust sheets and protective film in place.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long can I leave masking tape on?
Remove it as soon as the job allows. Leaving tape on for a long time can make the adhesive harder to remove, so check the pack for guidance.
Will tape damage fresh paint?
Wait until the paint is fully dry before applying tape, and choose a low-tack or delicate-surface tape for newly painted walls.
Can I use masking tape outdoors?
Only if it’s designed for exterior use. Standard indoor tape may not hold up in damp or cold conditions.
